Maynard Waters - The last of the wine

Exhibition Opening

2pm Sunday 7 April 2019
Octagon ArtSpace, Bungendore Wood Works Gallery

Exhibition continues until 30 May 2019

“After 49 International, National and Regional solo exhibitions... Was it a good drop . . . ? Time will tell”

Maynard Waters has been painting his unique mind’s eye views of the places and characters he finds in the unique Australian city and rural social landscapes he has visited for over 60 years.

Along the way he’s savoured the tastes of a variety of wines from very fine to those maybe not so fine and has now decided to call it a day. This, his last exhibition offers a suite of works illustrating the findings that he comes across in his long-time visits to this country’s city and bush environments.

He’s sold paintings that number in the thousands - finding enough success to support a family and maintain a lust for depicting the people and places of his wide “sunburnt country”. The works in this exhibition are a compendium of the new, the old - and in a number of instances are re-worked and re painted pieces.

“Being an artist allows me to use an entirely different language to express ideas. The more I draw and paint the more I realize that in a unique way I am actually a sort of visual medium, receptive to a deep undercurrent of place and subject. My paintings are increasingly abstracted from figuration and mostly landscapes. This method of painting largely comes from accidental and impetuous mark making. I have a fascination with the impasto nature of oil paint, in fact the character of its qualities at times seam even more important than the subject. Painting is my ongoing journey of exploration, constantly playing with warm and cool, dark and light colours as they collide within the tonal spaces of a painting.”
