‘Zyladrum’ is the name Jonathan Chance has given to the tongue drums he has been making since 1986. The design of the instruments and the manner of their making have evolved since then the main focus of Jonathan’s efforts being to improve the quality of the sound produced.
In early 1993 Jonathan developed techniques required to produce tuned drums and the non-tuned versions are no longer available. The tuned drums are in the pentatonic scale and can be made to order in any key. Zyladrums are best played as percussion rather than a melodic instruments and lend themselves to intuitive play.
They are an excellent instrument for young children. Tongue drums are found in several ancient cultures around the world and are indigenous to areas including Central America Eastern and Southeast Asia and parts of Africa. Tuned Zyladrums are in the Key of A.
