Helen Fitzgerald is an experienced artist and teacher. She holds degrees in Applied Science and Art Education and has studied overseas at the University of Vienna and the University of Perugia in Italy. Helen's first painting was accepted for the Wynne Prize exhibition in Sydney when she was only nineteen. She taught senior art at Kambala School in Sydney in 1966-67 before going overseas to work and study for three years. Helen moved to Queanbeyan in 1972 and has taught tertiary students in various Canberra institutions including the Canberra School of Art and nine years with the Faculty of Applied Science at Canberra University.
Since 1994 Helen has taught botanical illustration at the Centre for Continuing Education, ANU. She has had numerous solo shows and her commissioned works hang in France, Canada, the U.K., Germany, USA, Finland, Japan and Italy as well as in Australia. She has illustrated five books on flora and fauna of the ACT and alpine areas. Helen has had sell-out exhibitions at Sydney's Royal Botanical Gardens, the National Herbarium of Victoria and Canberra’s Cuppacumbalong Gallery. Helen was awarded a Gold Medal from the Royal Society of Botanical Artists in the UK. She has been the driving force behind the highly successful Canberra Botanica Exhibitions in recent years.
