6 October – 3 December 2012
Bungendore Wood Works Gallery invites you to celebrate the opening of an exhibition of fine, handcrafted furniture by Anton Gerner at 2pm Saturday 6 October, 2012 in the Octagon ArtSpace.
Anton Gerner is an award-winning furniture designer and maker based in Melbourne. He and his small, dedicated team of highly skilled craftspeople create one-off pieces of furniture for Australian and international clients.
Anton’s design aesthetic is contemporary, with inspiration from American Shaker furniture and the Biedermeier and Art Deco periods. His knowledge and appreciation of good design informs his creative ideas. It is his uncompromising attention to detail that sets him apart:
‘I am obsessed with quality. Nothing leaves my workshop until I am happy with it.’
Each design is crafted using traditional hand tools, construction techniques and finishes. Only the finest quality solid timber or veneer is selected from a wide range of Australian and imported timbers. Anton personally chooses each piece and he assesses the grain, colour, strength and texture so that the perfect timber is used to create a unique handcrafted piece of furniture.
Intricate inlays in contrasting timbers are hand-fitted; hand-cut dovetail joints in drawers add strength as well as beauty; solid timber table tops are attached with wooden buttons that allow for movement throughout the seasons; surfaces are hand-planed to precision flatness and hand-scraped before final sanding. Natural oils and waxes or traditional French polish are applied by hand to enhance the beauty of the distinctive timber selected.
In 2010 Anton received the Award for Best Production Piece in the Australian Wood Review Magazine’s ‘Maximise’ competition and his cabinet was highly commended by the judges at Studio Furniture 2010 held at Bungendore Wood Works Gallery.
