Home with Wood

Home with Wood features work by more than 20 acclaimed wood designers, makers and artists, all accredited members of Studio Woodworkers Australia, such as David Upfill-Brown, Tony Kenway, Neil Erasmus, David Emery and Will Matthysen

13 September – 20 November 2014

The exhibition will be opened at 2pm Saturday 13th September, 2014 by Professor Lyndon Anderson, Dean of the Faculty Arts and Design, University of Canberra

Home with Wood is a woodworking exhibition with a difference. In specifically featuring the work of accredited members of the national professional organisation, Studio Woodworkers Australia, it includes many of Australia’s finest designer-makers in wood. Already well-known for their design ideas and skills in producing significant one-off works and in carrying out special commissions, for this exhibition the participants have been invited to focus on affordable production pieces which will appeal to discerning home-owners who love wood and appreciate the values of handmade items. This will be an exciting exhibition that considers how people live and what they need, by providing innovative works that will enhance our contemporary domestic environments.

Phoebe Everill, president of Studio Woodworkers Australia, said in a world of throw away, mass produced furniture and replica design, Home with Wood acquaints audiences, to new concepts in original wood design, sustainability and function.

"Many of the makers and designers exhibiting are internationally acclaimed for their design ideas, and skills in producing significant one-off works and commissions. Home for Wood will showcase affordable, original pieces which will appeal to home-owners who love cutting edge design, and appreciate the values of quality handmade items."

Bungendore Wood Works Gallery Artistic Director David Mac Laren said the exhibition illustrates ways today’s furniture is designed to be eco-friendly, relevant and highly desirable to fit contemporary living.

"As designer-makers, our first challenges are to find ways to stay relevant, connect with clients and make a living from our passion."

The Shadow Chair is the result of an intensive design process by one of the most highly regarded designer makers in Australia. The Shadow Chair derives its name from black and white shapes created by casting shadows of curved templates held at various angles.

The chair maintains a curvilinear form no matter what angle it is viewed from. Every joint is angled relative to each other and the twenty mortise-and-tenon and two finger joints work together to brace the chair against racking offering great strength and allowing the weight of the chair to be kept at a bare minimum.

The Shadow Chair won the Design Excellence Award at the inaugural Studio Woodworkers Australia exhibition at Sturt Gallery.
