Nathan Day

Nathan comes from a trade background in furniture making where he completed a Certificate III in Furniture Making (Cabinetmaking) at the South West Regional College of TAFE in Bunbury in 2001. He completed the 3-year course in just two years by doing his stage 2 and stage 3 workload simultaneously and won the college's Cabinetmaking Apprentice award in 2001. Nathan completed a 4-year apprenticeship with John Streater Fine Furniture in Yallingup. John is a well-respected and internationally renowned local craftsman and the chance to learn the skills of furniture making in such an environment was an amazing opportunity and laid a solid foundation on which to build on. Nathan went on to become a finalist in the Training Excellence Awards Apprentice of the year in 2002. This was in the final year of his apprenticeship.

In 2003 Nathan traveled to the U.K. where he met the world famous furniture designer John Makepeace. After seeing the exceptional quality of fine English furniture Nathan decided that he should seek an opportunity to train in the U.K. and take his skills to a new level. He returned to Australia and in 2004 applied for an Australian Overseas Foundation Scholarship which he was awarded in mid 2005. In March 2006 Nathan was offered a 1-year traineeship with one of the U.K’s most prestigious furniture making workshops The Edward Barnsley Workshop in Petersfield Hampshire. He is first Australian to be trained to the Barnsley standard in the workshop’s 85-year history. Nathan spent 12 months training along side some of the world’s finest craftsmen.

In September 2007 Nathan started his business Nathan Day Furniture and Design where he worked to develop a range of pieces that reflected the high quality of craftsmanship he had become accustomed to and also to develop distinct design style that fused contemporary elements with traditional craftsmanship. He worked towards a point where he could start his own workshop and in mid 2010 with the acquisition of some fantastic new machinery and a series of new commissions Nathan set up his workshop at his parents property in Yallingup.
