Judi Power Thomson
Judi Power Thomson was born in Sydney and studied at the National Art School before moving to Canberra where she continued her studies at the Canberra School of Art. She has always been interested in figurative works starting her career as a commissioned portrait painter in oils.
Judi is a competent artist in all mediums and has won numerous awards for her work including first prizes in watercolour oil acrylic and mixed media. She has won Champion Exhibit at the Royal Canberra Show and has been a finalist in the Walkom Manning Art Prize Bega Regional Gallery Art Award the Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award Canberra Art Award and the Cowra Regional Gallery Art Award. A determination to capture the movement and passion in her subjects has led Judi to develop a bold contemporary style of painting bursting with colour.
A career spanning 20 years as an interior designer has strongly influenced her paintings with most works incorporating strong design elements. The majority of the work in this exhibition has been done on a textured surface which allows the base colour to mix with the upper layers to create more life and vibrancy in the painting. The different styles have been dictated by the subject matter. She has been a guest artist at the Canberra Times Outdoor Art Show and a previous president of the Artists Society of Canberra.
Her work hangs in the Canberra School of Music boardroom and is represented in private collections in Australia U.S.A. and the U.K. Her work has been reproduced in Australian Artist Magazine The Canberra Times and Chronicle Capital Magazine and the 2003 and 2004 Arts Around Canberra Musical Theatre Calendars. Judi lives with her husband on a vineyard just north of Canberra and works from her home studio.
