Dick Smith at the Wood Works

Entrepreneur, Businessman, Aviator, Philanthropist and Founder of Dick Smith Electronics, Dick Smith AC opened a new exhibition at Bungendore Wood Works Gallery Saturday 16 December 2018.

The Exhibition is the latest of a series of collaborative exhibitions by Sydney based marquetrist Michael Retter OAM and Canberra (now Bungendore) resident and fine wood worker, Scott Mitchell.

Retter and Mitchell first worked together on a commission through the Wood Works that connected them to Pip and Dick Smith, on a whimsical project some 20 years ago to fit out a train carriage that had been re-located on the Smith’s property near Gundaroo.

The Retter-Mitchell collaborations have always sought to explore new ground. “It was that project that saw us finally meet, and I that realised just how gifted Michael is in his specialist field of work” says Scott.

Michael in turn claimed a visit to Scott’s home last year introduced him to the beauty of the Snow Gum, when he saw a large picture on his wall. “This led me to experimentation with coloured woods and the results are featured here in this, our latest collaborative exhibition.”

The Retter/Mitchell exhibition continues in the Octagon Arspace at the Gallery until 27 February 2018.
